Centuria Science Park is located in a territory, close to the Adriatic Coast, characterised by the presence of fertile flat land and green hills. Here is the cross-point of two main Italian arterial roads, the first linking up Northern Italy with the Adriatic Coast, the latter linking up Rome with the Italian regions of the North-East and Central and Eastern Europe. Arterial railways, national and international airports and important ports are also present. Inhabited and urbanised since the Roman Age, rich of historical sites, it has always been characterised by a flourishing agriculture, thanks to the fertile soil and the geographical location which allowed the contact with external cultures and influences. During the last century, the traditional agricultural activity developed into a well-structured agrifood industry, focused on fruit, vegetable, sugar, poultry and egg production, with examples of national and European leaderships. In a third and more recent phase, a number of high-tech industrial activities, related to the agrifood sector, developed. Such activities, born originally to satisfy the local demand, developed and oriented the production towards other markets, creating a true technological district. An important opportunity for cultural and economic development is given by the recent establishment of a number of Departments of the University of Bologna, the oldest and one of the most important Universities in the world. The rapid development of the local productive sector, the growing awareness of the world competition and the presence of University scientific and technological know-how, stimulated entrepreneurs, public administrators and academics to conceive the idea of a Science Park as a tool to help the economic growth of the area and the competitiveness of the firms, through applied research and innovation transfer. This idea led to a project, approved by the European Union, and the creation of Centuria srl, the company which administers the Science Park. More than half of Centuria share capital is owned by twenty local firms, the rest by local public administrations and associations. The University is involved in the Directory Board and in the Executive Board.
